Lessons

I cover all aspects of piano playing, from the traditional note-reading and music theory to ear training, a strong grounding in good technique, duet and ensemble work and a good understanding of harmony and chords.

I aim for lessons to be fresh and inspiring, often including technology, plenty of opportunities to create music through guided improvisation / composition, and often learning through theory games and play for my younger pupils (I have taught pupils as young as age 3 but also teach plenty of adults too!).

I like to help my pupils explore the vast and exciting world of piano music, from traditional classical to new-age contemporary music and pop. I also believe it is important that the music we choose to study is influenced by the pupil, as ultimately, learning is more fun if you enjoy what you are playing!

I am happy to enter pupils for exams, as these can be an excellent tool for providing achievable goals and can motivate learning (I will only enter a pupils for an exam if I feel they are playing at around the required standard). However, they are not at all compulsory, some may wish to simply enjoy learning without entering exams and I am happy to work in this way.

Learning to play an instrument can be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences; fostering creativity (a great stress reliever!), improving memory, concentration, coordination, motor skills, listening skills and cooperation. It does require hard-work and dedication, and playing at home in between weekly lessons is vital if the pupil wishes to progress, but this effort is rewarded tenfold. I show my pupils strategies for playing the piano at home and how to learn new pieces effectively and efficiently.
